Frequently Asked Questions

Is North View dog friendly?     Yes!  We welcome well-behaved dogs at no extra charge, and there is plenty of space for them to run around.  The Duck's Nest is a small cottage, so we recommend it is best for just one dog, or two small dogs, but feel free to contact us to discuss your situation.  We provide dog towels, throws for the sofas, dog treats, an outside tap & a dog-sitting service, if wanted.

Is the garden enclosed?    Yes, The Duck's Nest cottage has its own private garden, enclosed by stone walls, fences and gates, and Crofter's Cottage is set within our 1 acre wildlife garden, also walled & gated.  So you can relax in peace and your dog can enjoy a good sniff and run around.  However, if your dog likes to pretend it is a mountain goat or an Olympic hurdler and is prone to jumping walls, we ask you to keep it under control to protect our hens, ducks and neighbouring sheep.

Is there parking?     Yes, there is gated, driveway parking for one car per cottage.  Further parking is freely available on the road directly opposite North View Cottages.

Do you provide linen?     Yes, towels, flannels, tea-towels and bed linen are provided.   If you want to allow your dog/s on the beds, we ask that you bring your own bed linen, and let us know so we can leave the beds unmade.

Is there a welcome pack?     Not only is there a gift basket containing items we hope you will enjoy or find useful during your stay, we also supply tea, coffee, milk and sugar so that you can have a hot drink on arrival.  In addition, there is a pantry store with yummy jams & chutneys and basic cooking supplies.

What do we need to bring?     Whilst your cottage is self-catering, we know what it is like trying to work out what to pack for your stay, so to keep things simple we provide a reasonable supply of the basic necessities such as toilet paper, washing-up liquid, dish-washer tablets, salt, pepper, cooking oil and tinfoil etc.  Please bring your own bathroom toiletries, and anything else you feel you may need.

Do you provide wood for the log burner?    Yes, the fire will be laid ready for you to light on arrival, should you wish to do so, and there will be a supply of logs for your first night or two (depending on how long you sit and enjoy the fire!).  Additional logs can be bought from us if necessary.

Is there a hairdryer?    Yes, there is a hairdryer in each bedroom.

Can I book an early check-in or late check-out?  We are happy to accommodate your arrival and departure plans if we possibly can, however, in order for us to fully clean the cottages and have them looking lovely for every guest, we are unable to accommodate early arrivals or late departures unless there are no guests staying before or after your stay.

Is there WiFi?    Yes, and you will be provided with the WiFi code in your pre-arrival email.

Can we watch Netflix or Amazon TV?    The television in your cottage is compatible with watching Netflix and/or Amazon TV, so simply log in to your account to watch.  Please remember to log out of your account before departure.

Can we feed the smallholding animals?  We love having helpers at feeding time, so if you would like to assist just let us know!  In your gift basket you will find a bag of grain for feeding the chickens, ducks & turkeys, and we are happy to top it up so you can enjoy treating the birds whenever you like.  Please do not feed kitchen scraps to the birds or pigs, as it is illegal in the UK to feed them with any produce which has been in a kitchen.  Kitchen scraps are welcome on our compost heaps though!

What animals will there be at North View when we visit?  North View is a working smallholding, so the type and number of animals we have can vary, depending on the season.  Generally, there will be ducks, chickens, turkeys and quail throughout the year, although in the winter there may be bird-flu restrictions in place, which mean they will be housed.  Please contact us if you want to check what animals will be here at the time of your visit.

Is it walkable to the nearest restaurant/bar?    The lovely local pub (temporarily closed), which serves food, is a very short and picturesque stroll through the village, approximately 400 yards, to be precise!  There are three other walkable pubs, The Morritt Arms, Rokeby Inn & Smallways, however, they are further away so a round trip via footpaths will be 6 to 8 miles (less if you go by road).

Is there public transport into Barnard Castle and Richmond?    Yes, there is a local bus which runs between the two towns, with a bus stop in the lane in Barningham village.

Where is the nearest supermarket?  We are lucky enough to have a small deli in the village selling most essential items (bread, milk, wine, fruit & veg & freshly made pies etc), plus there are several large farm shops selling produce within a short drive.  However, main supermarkets such as Morrisons, Co-op and Lidl can be found in either Barnard Castle or Richmond.  Sausages, bacon & eggs can be bought from us right here at North View!

Is there an electric vehicle charging (EVC) point at North View?  We are sorry, the power supply to North View does not have the electrical capacity to enable us to install an EVC point.  The nearest charging point is located at the Morrit Arms in Greta Bridge, 2 miles from Barningham.

Is there a smoking area at North View?  No, smoking is not allowed anywhere on the property, including within the grounds.

What makes North View Cottages Special?  We think it is the little things.  Quality furnishings, soft towels and fresh white linen go without saying, but the pantry of home-made produce, selection of wonderful recipe books, beautiful magazines to read, option of evening platters & breakfast packs, & a host of thoughtful extras is what makes us so unique and special.  We hope you think so too.

Are there walks and trails from the door of the cottage?  Absolutely!  The nearest footpath is directly opposite North View which will lead you to paths through woodland, along the River Greta or through open fields, and at the top of the village there is direct access to footpaths and bridleways over Barningham Moor to The Stang Forest & on into the Yorkshire Dales.  In fact, there are footpaths and bridleways in almost every direction!  Furthermore, we are located just a short distance from The Teesdale Way National Trail.

What is the best time of year to visit North View Cottages?  North View Cottages are perfect in all seasons!  In Spring the gardens come alive with an incredible display of thousands of spring flowering bulbs, followed by our glorious roses in summer.  Autumn brings the drama and spectacular colours of our wonderful trees and winter-flowering shrubs, before Winter transforms our gardens into a magical, romantic winter wonderland!

What is there to do at North View?  You will be spoiled for choice of things to do during your stay!  Check out our 'Just For You' and 'Local Activities' pages for lots of ideas.
