Paul & Alison & North View Cottages

About

Paul and Alison cropped.jpg

Paul and Alison originally met way back in the 1990's & reconnected again 20 years later, having lived in many different locations in England, France & Scotland.  Our journey together has now brought us to Barningham, nestled between Yorkshire and County Durham, and we both feel a special connection to this beautiful part of the UK.  Our passion for all things outdoors, in particular hiking and touring, makes this the most perfect location for us.  We were looking for somewhere to become our home which would enable us to be as self-sufficient as we could be, combined with creating a wonderful natural space to encourage wildlife and share with visitors.  After a long search, we bought North View in 2021 and we could not be happier.

We have an interest in self-sufficiency, gardening and foraging, so our dream was to share this by providing beautiful, dog friendly accommodation where we could also offer that little bit extra, such as smallholding & gardening information, practical experiences & catering options etc so finding the right location and style of property was key.  As soon as we saw North View we fell in love with it; its picture-perfect village setting and the way the gardens and land had already been lovingly shaped and tended by the previous owners really stole our hearts.

We have already done a lot of work developing and planting the gardens, and of course renovating the buildings to create North View Cottages, and we are very excited with all the plans and ideas we have for the future.  We are still in the early stages of setting up our smallholding, but one of the first things we did was prepare to bring our existing small flock of chickens down from Scotland, where they were being fostered until we were ready.  Once here, they were quickly joined by 6 very friendly rescue hens, and so our story began...

Our home is a separate cottage within the grounds, so while your space is completely private to you, we will be nearby to help with any queries if needed.

We hope that you will feel completely at home while staying with us, and that you will love your cottage and surroundings as much as we do!

The Gardens

The beautifully landscaped grounds are a gardener's delight.  With something to see and enjoy in all seasons, from the magnificent spring bulb and Hellebore display in late winter and early spring, to the profusion of colour and scent in the summer flower gardens. You will find yourself whiling away the days in good company with the abundance of wildlife the gardens attract.  Find a quiet spot beside the wildlife pond, set out your blanket for a picnic in the orchard or wander to the top of the holding to watch the sun set over the outstanding views across the Yorkshire and County Durham countryside.

The Smallholding

After a stroll around the gardens and orchard you can wander through the field gate to be greeted by all the things which make North View a productive holding.  You will find our no-dig vegetable patch, large duck pond, free range chickens and turkeys, and piggy paddock where our heritage-breed Oxford-Sandy & Black pigs hang out.

During your stay, you are welcome to help at feeding times or with egg collection, or to lend a hand in the vegetable patch if you wish!  We will be on hand to recommend seasonal recipes you can try using produce we can supply.
